Mokume Gane Rings

Questions about Mokume Gane Rings and Jewelry

How deep is the Mokume Gane pattern?
The basic pattern, created by twisting the bar of Mokume Gane, goes all the way through the thickness of the ring.

Do you make your own Mokume Gane materials?
Yes, we purchase precious metal alloys in the form of sheets. The sheets are bonded together under very high pressure and temperatures in a special assembly that we call a TEMTP system. After bonding, we hot forge, roll and selectively remove material in order to create Mokume Gane patterns. To learn more about the Mokume Gane Process, select this link.

Do you offer Mokume Gane bands with a random or star pattern?
Andrew Nyce Designs does offer Mokume Gane bands with a random pattern; this pattern is offered on our CONTOUR rings. At present, the star pattern is only offered on a custom basis. In addition, Andrew Nyce Designs continues to explore new Mokume Gane patterns.

Do you make custom Mokume Gane patterns or color combinations?
Yes, we make custom Mokume Gane billets and create custom patterns. A few of our Mokume Gane compositions started with a request from a customer. So, if you have an idea for a Mokume pattern or color composition, we will work with you to help realize your perfect Mokume Gane ring.

What metal alloys are used in your Mokume Gane rings?
Our Mokume Gane rings contain combinations of 950 Platinum, 950 Palladium, Palladium 500, 18K Royal Yellow Gold, 14K Red Gold, 14K Palladium White Gold, 14K Green Gold, and Palladium-enhanced Sterling Silver. Custom Mokume Gane billets can contain almost any combination of alloys that are available in the form of sheets.

What is Palladium-enhanced Sterling Silver?
Palladium-enhanced Sterling Silver is a new alloy containing 3% palladium, 92.5% silver, along with an additional 4.5% of copper. This alloy was developed specifically as a tarnish-resistant alloy with a higher melting point and a greater hardness than traditional sterling silver, which contains 7.5% copper and 92.5% silver.

How durable and wear-resistant are Mokume Gane rings?
Mokume Gane rings are as durable as the individual precious metal alloys used to make the Mokume Gane. All rings eventually get scratches - some of which can be removed using the ring care kit provided.

What are the historical origins of Mokume Gane?

Do you make Mokume Gane jewelry other than wedding and engagement rings?
