Care Instructions for Mokume Gane Rings

The highest contrast between the adjacent Gold, Silver, Platinum, or Palladium alloys in your Mokume Gane ring is obtained with a matte surface finish.

In all likelihood, the Mokume Gane ring you purchased, even one that is etched, has a matte surface finish. Over time, the matte surface finish can and will change character.

Surface Finish
You can easily maintain the surface finish yourself using the ring care kit provided with every ring purchased by Andrew Nyce Designs. Follow the instructions provided below:

  • Saturate a fine or medium Scotch Brite pad with liquid soap and gently stroke the ring along its circumference under a slow stream of running water. Keep the pad saturated with soap so that you are constantly providing lubricant while gently stroking the ring. A fine Scotch Brite pad is provided in the ring care kit. Scotch Brite pads also can be found at hardware stores such as Home Depot.
  • In another variation, place whitening toothpaste on a Scotch Brite pad, and proceed as described above. You will obtain a matte surface finish with a slightly higher luster.

For the inside finish of the ring, you can use the Scotch Brite pad method, as described above, to achieve a matte surface finish. If you prefer a semi-polished finish, use the polishing cloth provided in your ring care kit.

Platinum Channels, Liners, and Edges

Special care instructions apply to Damascus Stainless Steel rings with platinum channels, liners, or edges. Although, platinum is very durable and scratch-resistant, rings should be removed during heavy work. If the platinum surface becomes scratched or gouged, it should be buffed and polished professionally to help retain its natural luster.

Care Instructions for Mokume Gane Rings with Gemstones

Slight bumps and taps occur during the normal wearing of your Damascus Stainless Steel ring. Over time, gemstones can become loose no matter how expertly the initial setting has been done. In fact, gemstones can become so loose that just one additional tap or bump could pop the gemstones out of their settings.

Because of this, Andrew Nyce Designs advises that any Damascus ring containing gemstones be cleaned and inspected by a trusted jeweler after the first month of wear, and then at least every 6 months thereafter. The cleaning will keep the gemstones looking their best. And the inspection will determine whether the gemstone is still tightly held in place by the setting or whether there has been any structural damage to either the gemstone or setting.

We offer the following suggestions:

  • Have an accurate appraisal of your engagement ring updated every few years in case of loss.
  • Insure your valuable engagement ring against theft, loss, or accidental damage.
  • Periodically clean your ring, especially around the gems, with solution of water and mild liquid detergent. A soft bristled brush can loosen dirt and a soft, lint-free cloth should be used for drying.
  • Take your ring off before participating in a sport or other vigorous activity that could involve sharp blows.
  • Take off your ring while cleaning with harsh chemicals because they may discolor, dissolve, or otherwise damage either the stone or the setting.
